Do your dull, yellowed teeth leave you feeling down? The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry says research shows many adults feel the same way. Improve your look--and self-confidence, too--with professional teeth whitening from H.F. Wehbe DDS, your dental teeth whiteningpractice in Roxbury, MA.

Dr. Wehbe, and his associate dentists, Drs. Duka, Daher and Stipho, are "committed to creating beautiful first impressions." In-office or at-home teeth whitening is a safe, economical way to improve the look of your smile and can change tooth color by several shades.

How Teeth Become Discolored

Teeth become stained because organic matter from what we put into our mouths gets caught in the mineral matrix called tooth enamel. While age, injury, some prescription medications, root canal therapy and other issues play a role in deeper, more difficult discoloration, extrinsic, or surface, stains come from:

  • darkly colored foods such as blueberries, carrots, and soy sauce
  • dark beverages such as coffee, black tea, cola and red wine
  • smoking and tobacco use
  • poor oral hygiene and infrequent cleanings with a professional hygienist
How Whitening Helps
The best whitening candidates are people with healthy teeth, and gums that are free of extensive restorations such as fillings. There are two options to qualified patients--in-office whitening and at-home whitening. Both methods employ a professional grade hydrogen peroxide gel which lifts the staining material out of tooth enamel.
In the office, Dr. Wehbe and his staff protect the patient's teeth and gums with a rubber dam, confining the gel to tooth surfaces. While the patient relaxes comfortably in the dental chair, the applied gel seeps into the teeth, effectively whitening them in about an hour. The change is dramatic--up to 8 shades in color.
With the at-home option, the patient wears two thin custom-made trays filled with peroxide gel. The at-home gel is less powerful than the office version but whitens just as well when applied for the prescribed time daily for a week or more.
Maintaining a White Smile
Daily flossing and twice-daily brushing are the best ways to maintain a healthy mouth and a bright smile. Additionally, Dr. Wehle's professional staff urges patients of all ages come to their Roxbury, MA office for semi-annual cleanings and examinations. Expect professional whitening results to last 2 years or more.
It helps to make some lifestyle changes, too:
  • Limit staining foods and beverages.
  • Drink plenty of water to wash away food particles and to stimulate the production of saliva, the body's built-in tooth cleaner.
  • Stop smoking or chewing tobacco.
  • Get whitening touch-ups as needed.
