Tooth loss can affect anyone no matter the age. In fact, about 178 million people in America have at least one missing tooth. Untreated tooth loss can cause serious health complications. Let your West Roxbury dentist tell you why dental implants are a great choice for your smile.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants replace the roots of your missing tooth and also serve as an anchor to hold a replacement tooth, also known as a dental crown. The implant itself looks like a small titanium screw.
What is the implant procedure like?
The procedure will take a while to complete. The first phase includes surgically placing the implant into the jawbone. Over time the neighboring tissue and bones will naturally start to fuse with the implant, creating a permanent anchor. This fusing process is known as osseointegration and it takes a few months to fully occur.
Once osseointegration has happened and your mouth has completed healed, we will firmly place a natural-looking dental crown over the implant to replace your missing tooth.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants boast a ton of benefits including aesthetic improvements and an increase in your tooth’s function, as well as preventing bone loss and stimulating new bone growth. Plus, dental implants can’t form cavities! They also don’t require special care. Just continue to brush and floss daily and your implants should remain healthy. However, it is important that you maintain good oral hygiene and do not neglect your dental health.
Are there any cons to dental implants?
Some patients are a bit surprised by the upfront cost of dental implants, particularly when compared to dentures or bridges; however, you are paying for a procedure and a tooth that will last you a lifetime with the proper care. Not even dentures or bridges last a lifetime. So keep that in mind when you feel the sticker shock coming over you.
Also, if you’re looking for a quick fix, dental implants might not be the best option. This procedure takes months and it isn’t the most comfortable process; however, the payoff can be well worth it. It just depends on whether you want to wait months for your finished result or if you would rather have a completed smile sooner.
Am I a good candidate for implants?
While there are certainly some patients that just aren’t right for this line of treatment, the best way to know whether implants in West Roxbury are right for you is to examine your smile. It is not recommend that those with untreated cavities and gum disease, patients who are pregnant, those undergoing chemotherapy and those whose immune system are compromised, smokers and children get dental implants.
